Tooth Extraction
Why are Teeth Removed?

Teeth may be extracted for various reasons, including:

-
Deep decay affects the tooth.
-
Extensive infection damaging the tooth or surrounding bone.
-
Lack of sufficient space for all teeth in the mouth.

Dentists often recommend extracting impacted teeth that have only partially erupted. A partial eruption can lead to bacterial entry, causing an infection that may spread to the surrounding bone. Additionally, impacted teeth can exert pressure on nearby roots, potentially damaging them. Removing impacted teeth can prevent infection, protect adjacent teeth and bone, and alleviate future pain.

How are Teeth Removed?

Before extraction, your medical and dental history will be reviewed, and necessary X-rays will be taken to assess the tooth and surrounding bone's condition. Local anesthesia will be administered to numb the area. The tooth will then be loosened with an elevator tool and extracted using dental forceps. Sometimes, the underlying bone may require smoothing and recontouring, and stitches may be necessary. Dr. Irina may use laser-assisted techniques for disinfection and healing promotion.

What Can I Expect After an Extraction?

After the extraction, it's crucial to maintain cleanliness and prevent infection. You'll be instructed to gently bite down on sterile gauze to control bleeding for 45 minutes. Avoid smoking, vigorous mouth rinsing, or cleaning adjacent teeth for 24 hours. Expect numbness in your lips and cheek, which will fade in a few hours. Some pain and discomfort are normal, and Dr. Irina may recommend or prescribe painkillers. Applying ice packs can reduce swelling, and you should limit strenuous activity and avoid hot liquids and straws. Gentle rinsing with warm salt water is advised after the first day. Discomfort should diminish within three days to two weeks, but contact us if you experience prolonged pain, swelling, bleeding, or fever. Following extraction, it's imperative to prioritize a follow-up appointment to ensure optimal healing and address any concerns promptly.
